mission ANd philosophy

The Avalon Academy is a school dedicated to providing exceptional educational services to children with movement disorders such as cerebral palsy. In our highly-skilled and nurturing environment, we integrate communication, academic and motor-skill development. Our individualized, interdisciplinary, and family-focused approach encompasses all areas of challenge for our students. This enables our children to fulfill their maximum personal potential, so that they thrive in both school and society.

At Avalon, we strive to be a second home for you and your child. We have adapted the environment of Avalon with our students and clients in mind, rather than expecting them to adapt to our environment. Avalon’s team is made up of phenomenal physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, special education teachers, orientation and mobility specialists, vision teachers, and a tireless team of instructional assistants who are in constant collaboration with one another. The team is committed to a standard of excellence that is founded in evidence based practice, compassion, and dignity for everyone that we serve.

Every student is teachable. Every moment is a teachable moment.

Movement Integrated Special Teaching System (MISTS™) of The Avalon Academy has developed from Kinga Czegeni’s over two decades of unique experience studying, researching and working in Europe and the United States in special education with children with cerebral palsy and related conditions. Kinga has created a program that reflects best practices from several modalities including Conductive Education, the Anat Baniel Method® and studies at San Francisco State University Special Education Department.

Kinga is a highly-skilled teacher with extraordinary vision, commitment and drive.
— Dr. Neil Sharp, M.D.

Avalon prides itself on having an innovative movement intervention program that is inspired by the Anat Baniel Method®, a cutting-edge scientific approach to safely enhance movement, coordination and create new possibilities for children with cerebral palsy. This approach is adapted to a real-world, multidisciplinary, group-based educational setting. As MISTS™ is tailored to individual student needs and outcomes, it is continually evolving and not limited by any particular methodology. Each student is empowered to develop at his or her own pace for the best possible outcomes.

This humanizing approach has created a non-competitive, vibrant and nurturing community which benefits not only the students, but also their families and the staff at Avalon.
