We want to empower our students with a means to express their wants, needs, and ideas by providing ample amounts of meaningful and motivating choice-making opportunities. One method of choice-making that many of our communicators benefit from is the partner assisted scanning (PAS) method of communication, also known as live voice scanning (LVS). As the facilitator scans through the choices, the AAC user signals with a ‘yes’ response (e.g., smile, vocalization) to indicate his or her selection. We incorporate a multisensory approach with the PAS method, which involves pairing the choices with a variety of sensory inputs (e.g., auditory, visual, tactile, olfactory). This offers our communicators the best chance at most reliably expressing their thoughts.
